Police: Credit card skimmers found in Buffalo Grove, Mundelein

Credit card skimmers were placed at Shell gas stations in Buffalo Grove and Mundelein in an apparent attempt to steal credit card information, Buffalo Grove police said Friday.

A clerk at a Shell station in Mundelein, 2250 S. Route 83, initially discovered the device on a reader inside of the store and alerted employees of other area Shell stations, police said in a news release.

Suspected card skimmers also were found at two stations in Buffalo Grove: 1200 N. Arlington Heights Road and 50 W. Lake-Cook Road, police said.

Police don't yet know whether any cardholder information was stolen. Both the Mundelein and Buffalo Grove departments urge those who have visited any of the three stations to keep a close watch on their credit card and banking activity.

"Patrons of Shell Gas Stations should remain diligent in checking their accounts for accuracy," said Buffalo Grove Deputy Chief Michael Szos. "This incident is an unfortunate reminder that even credit card readers inside of businesses can be compromised."

Video footage from the stores will be examined for suspect information; it is unknown when the skimmers were placed in the stores, police said.

Police said people should examine all credit card readers and ATMs prior to using them. For tips on safe credit card use, visit ftc.gov/news-events/blogs/business-blog/2017/06/best-practices-foil-gas-station-skimmers.
