Bail remains same for man accused of escaping sheriff's squad car in Third Lake

Bail did not change for a Romeoville man accused of escaping a Lake County sheriff's vehicle by wiggling out of a pair of handcuffs and through a small Plexiglas window in Third Lake.

Assistant Public Defender Maura Mercure was expected to ask Lake County Judge Paul Novak for a reduced bail amount for Salvador Leo, 25, of the 0-100 block of Arlington Drive. Leo was being held on $50,000 on charges of felony escape and felony unlawful possession of a fraudulent prescription after his arrest at 4 p.m. July 24.

Mercure withdrew the request at the last minute Tuesday and asked Novak for a new court date instead. Leo's next court date is Aug. 21.

Authorities were called to a pharmacy on the 34300 block of North Route 45 for a report of someone attempting to fraudulently acquire a prescription, authorities said in a news release.

A deputy arrested Leo for presenting the pharmacy with a bogus prescription for a controlled substance, authorities said. The deputy handcuffed Leo, placed him in the back of a squad car, then went inside the store to speak with the pharmacist.

When the coast was clear, Leo forced his hands out of the handcuffs, shoved himself through a small window in the Plexiglas shield that separates the back seat and front seat of squad cars, authorities said. After reaching the front seat, Leo opened the vehicle door and ran off, authorities said.

Police picked up Leo about 90 minutes later in a nearby subdivision, authorities said.
