WCC settles part of lawsuit over bum cooling system at Aurora campus

Waubonsee Community College has settled part of a lawsuit it brought over what it considered a faulty cooling system installed at its downtown Aurora campus.

The college's trustees approved the settlement Wednesday night.

Cordogan Clark and Associates, the Chicago firm that designed the building, has agreed to have its insurance company pay Waubonsee $100,000. The firm also has offices in Aurora and Indiana.

It also will pay $100,000 out of its own account, in three annual installments.

And it is giving the college $50,000 worth of credit, to be used on other projects Cordogan is doing or will do for the college.

The college is still suing Johnson Controls Inc.

The building opened in June 2011. The cooling system never worked properly, according to the lawsuit. There were nine compressor failures, the college said, and a suggestion to run the heat and the air conditioning at the same time didn't solve the problem.

It cost $539,000 to install a replacement system, according to the lawsuit, which was filed in 2017.
