Palatine council approves new storm sewers, water mains

Nearly $1 million in improvement projects addressing poor stormwater sewers and faulty water mains were approved Monday by the Palatine village council.

Old age and frequent breaks mean a combined 3,600 feet of water mains on Pepper Tree and Del Mar drives and Cyprus Court need to be replaced, officials said. Palatine's Concept Plumbing Inc. will perform the work in the neighborhood southwest of Dundee and Hicks roads.

Expected to cost $799,000, one leg of the project this summer will entail replacing 1,800 feet of pipe from Garden Avenue to Thackeray Drive. Another 1,500 feet of water main will be replaced on Del Mar from Garden to Pepper Tree, with 300 feet of new line going in on Cypress Court.

Upgrades for a poor stormwater sewer system will be the focus in the Stonebridge subdivision, just west of the Twin Lakes Golf Course and Recreation Area. The section in question is between Glencoe Street, Rohlwing Road, Kenilworth Avenue and Leonard Road, Palatine Public Works Director Matt Barry said.

"The neighborhood bounded by Rohlwing, Glencoe, Leonard and Kenilworth has been identified with stormwater inundation in rear-yard areas, which had in certain instances resulted in structural flooding," Barry said at Monday night's village council session.

For $136,070, John Neri Construction Co. Inc. of Addison was contracted to build two 15-inch-diameter storm sewers to serve Stonebridge. The new lines will connect to a larger storm sewer on Kenilworth.

Meanwhile, the Palatine village council also approved engineering work for sidewalk work on Palatine's northeast side. South Holland-based Robinson Engineering Ltd. was selected to do the job for no more than $33,000.

Under the proposal, the sidewalks would be extended on the west side of Rand Road from Spruce to Capri drives within a tax increment financing district zone meant to spur business redevelopment. Barry said the plan would "significantly make strides" toward completing sidewalk extensions in the special development zone.

Work to replace an existing asphalt path with a concrete sidewalk, along with Americans With Disabilities Act improvements, also is pegged for the west side of Hicks Road, north and south of Fawn Lane near Deerpath Lake.
