Artist begins summer residency at Arlington Heights library

Young artists had a chance to learn from a professional Wednesday afternoon at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library.

Chris Raschka, a New York-based children's book author and illustrator, is the library's summer artist-in-residence.

He's conducting bookmaking workshops, art demonstrations, storytime, an artist talk and book signings at the library through Saturday.

Some 50 works of his art also are on display in the library's Marketplace through Aug. 12.

On Wednesday, his first day at the library, Raschka led children through the process of making a book, from developing characters and creating a story to drawing, painting, folding and sewing. He'll conduct a bookmaking workshop for adults Saturday, though the program is already full.

Registration at ahml.info is still available for his artist talk and book signing at 7 p.m. Thursday and storytime and book signing at 10 a.m. Friday.

Raschka will be working on art in the Marketplace from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
