Round Lake High graduates revisit their grade school beginnings

More than 125 Round Lake High School graduating seniors wearing their caps and gowns received high-fives and congratulations Tuesday as they marched through the halls of School District 116 elementary and middle schools.

The seniors, scheduled to graduate Friday, also collected letters written by first and second graders and, in same cases, hugs from former teachers.

"We had a number of our seniors go to the elementary schools, like Indian Hills and Round Lake Middle School, to kind of say goodbye to their teachers and thank them for all the things that they had done," Round Lake High School Principal Michael Berrie said. "I saw hugs. I saw smiles. So it was a great day."

The idea for the march came about when principals at District 116 grade schools spotted Facebook postings about similar events elsewhere and decided to try it in Round Lake.

"Today's grad walk truly warmed my heart. To see our former students, some that I taught from first grade through fifth grade, so grown up and mature with their heads held high, it was a very proud day for me seeing their success as a RLHS graduate," Indian Hills teacher Pam Mulvaney said.
