A new column that will point out real fake news

In Sunday's paper, we will introduce a column that calls out the fake news that undermines our democracy and the trust we place in the genuine news and information we receive.

Bob Oswald's Facts Matter will appear each Sunday. I hope you'll make it a regular part of your news diet and that you'll share Oswald's observations with your friends and family.

The focus of his column is not debatable bias or political hyperbole. As citizens and consumers of news, we all should judge those things with candid and neutral critical thinking.

Oswald's mission is to look for overt fake news - the stuff we can evaluate and declare to be false without equivocation. And to point out the evidence that shows it to be false.

Oswald is well equipped to make these journalistic judgments. He's been an editor in the Chicago area for more than 20 years.

"Education is important for an informed society," Oswald says. "False reports only muddy the waters."

We hope you'll find his column to be interesting - and illuminating.

Thanks, as always, for reading.
