Aurora man faces felony weapons charges after traffic stop

An Aurora man is charged with illegally possessing a gun after police say they found a loaded handgun in his car during a traffic stop.

At about 1:10 a.m. Monday, police say an officer saw a car almost cause a crash by failing to yield at an intersection and running a stop sign at LaSalle and Benton Streets, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.

The officer pulled the car over and noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from inside, according to the release. Police said they found small amounts of marijuana on two of the passengers and located a .38 caliber handgun in the glove compartment, which was later tied to the driver, 21-year-old Audel Villafuerte-Mora of Aurora.

Police said Villafuerte-Mora was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, a felony. The other occupants of the car weren't criminally charged, officials said.
