The play is afoot this weekend at Woodland Middle School

Sherlock Holmes and his nemesis, Professor Moriarty, are coming to life this weekend as students from the Woodland Middle School Drama Club present the play "Sherlock Holmes" Friday and Saturday.

The play is an adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's popular detective story.

"We picked a play that kind of goes with the kids, and we had a lot of boys this year and a lot of the students that could do a British accent," drama director Amy Miller-Garcia said. "They love doing this play, and a lot of them are talking in a British accent when they are not on stage."

The story is based on a woman named Alice Faulkner who has letters written by a deceased girl that are desired by both Sherlock and Moriarty. Holmes realizes Moriarty wants the letters for sinister reasons and will risk his life to stop him.

The director said students scoured thrift shops in search of clothing for their costumes and props to give the appearance of yesteryear.

The play will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday in Cafeteria A at the school, 7000 W. Washington St., Gurnee. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for kids 12 and younger. Saturday's performance will be interpreted for the hearing-impaired.
