2 candidates gone after challenges in Lake County Board races

A challenge to the nominating petitions of a Lake County Board candidate was upheld and another overruled Friday, and a candidate in a third county board race withdrew.

The Lake County Election Commission completed two hearings Friday.

An objection to the nominating petition of Sharon Allen, Democratic candidate for District 3, was sustained due to an insufficient number of valid signatures. Her name will not appear on the ballot for the March 20 primary, according to Lake County Clerk Carla Wyckoff.

District 3 includes portions of Lindenhurst and Round Lake Heights and portions of Round Lake Beach and Lake Villa.

The objection to the nominating petition of Vance Wyatt, Democratic candidate in District 14, was overruled and his name will appear on the primary ballot.

Wyatt was appointed to the seat in June following the death of longtime board member Audrey Nixon. District 14 includes Park City and portions of North Chicago, Waukegan and Gurnee.

A hearing to consider an objection to the petition of David Spada, Republican candidate for District 10, was to have been held Monday. Spada said in a Facebook post Friday he was withdrawing.

He said if he stayed he would have to "expend a large amount of time and money appealing through the courts" and he didn't want to take time away from his law practice, family and friends.

District 10 includes portions of Mundelein, Hawthorn Woods, Round Lake Park, Wauconda and Long Grove.

Fourteen of the county board's 21 seats - all carrying four-year terms - are up for election in 2018. Visit akecountyil.gov/DocumentCenter/View/13059 for a list of the candidates.

Three candidates for other offices also were eliminated during the challenge process.

Wyckoff said judicial candidates Matt Stanton and Joe McKeown have withdrawn. Both had objections pending Monday and Tuesday but those have been withdrawn, she added.

The objection to the petition of Tai Ming Chu, candidate for Democratic Precinct 312 Committeeman, was sustained for legal insufficiencies.
