Aurora Housing Authority warns of Section 8 scam

The Aurora Housing Authority is warning residents of a scam regarding its Section 8 program in which people are being asked for personal information in exchange for a spot on the waiting list.

The city's Section 8 subsidized housing waiting list is currently closed with no plans to open it, the AHA posted last week on its Facebook page, so the AHA is not accepting any new applications at this time.

People should not give the website https://section8list.net/ any information because it is not affiliated with the AHA, the post said.

In an update to the post, the AHA said the site began redirecting visitors to affordablehousingonline.com, a website for a legitimate organization that had no control over the scam site. The AHA later updated the post again to say that the website took payments as a promise to hold a spot and that anyone who gave money should cancel the payment if possible.

Housing authorities are prohibited from accepting money in exchange for a spot on the list or a voucher, the AHA said.

Aurora police are investigating the scam, according to the AHA.
