Dogs that attacked child in Aurora euthanized

The two dogs who attacked and seriously injured a 10-year-old boy in Aurora have been euthanized, and their owner faces $3,500 in fines.

One dog was caught shortly after the attack Friday morning, but the other eluded capture. About 8:30 a.m. Monday, the 20-year-old owner, who lives on the 1100 block of Hinman Street near Aurora, told Animal Care and Control that he found the dog, Aurora police said, and he turned the dog over to the animal care facility.

Police said the owner was cited for letting the pit bulls run at large and for the attack on the boy. He also was cited because one of the dogs was overdue for its rabies shot, police said. Kane County Animal Control is now testing both animals for rabies.

The boy is still hospitalized at an unnamed suburban hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

The boy was walking to school on the 1000 block of Jackson Street when he was mauled by the dogs, police said.

When a 31-year-old Aurora woman driving by saw the boy being attacked, she left her vehicle to help him. The dogs ran off, and the woman called 911.

Police did not name the dogs' owner but said he was "known to Aurora Animal Care and Control" and has several other citations pending.
