Des Plaines Elementary District 62 hosting astronomy night

Algonquin Middle School's annual "Family Astronomy Night" is 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 27, at the school, 767 E. Algonquin Road, Des Plaines.

Students, parents, and family members are invited to view the night sky through telescopes, watch videos and demonstrations, participate in STEM design challenges, experience virtual reality with Google Expeditions and learn about Maine West High School's science courses.

Members from the Northwest Suburban Astronomers volunteer their time to teach students about astronomy.

"They not only bring their expertise on astronomy, but also their previous professions in the STEM fields ranging from biochemists to engineers," teacher Sarah Murphy said in a news release. "The volunteers bring their telescopes, presentations, and activities, which are incredibly engaging."
