Card reader devices attached to ATM in Des Plaines

Des Plaines police report that an ATM was tampered with in an apparent attempt to steal people's card numbers and PIN numbers.

Police said an NCR technician found two devices had been placed on the ATM at Walgreens, 1858 E. Oakton St., between 1:27 and 3:39 p.m. Aug. 13.

A false cover was attached to the paper receipts dispenser, hiding a miniature camera with a 32GB ScanDisk Ultra plus SD card powered by a battery pack that had been installed.

The technician also found a false blue ATM cover over the slot where the ATM cards are inserted. It contained what appeared to be a card reading device.

Video surveillance shows an unidentified white male, 5-foot-10, heavy set and wearing a light hat, dark T-shirt and shorts appearing to install the suspicious equipment, police said.
