Man found dead after veering off I-290

Rescue workers found a man dead in his vehicle around 12:30 p.m. Thursday after his car veered off the southbound lanes of I-290 north of Devon Avenue.

"It appears that he probably suffered from the medical condition before the incident and that he did not die from injuries sustained during the accident," said Elk Grove Village Fire Batallion Chief Mark Sellers.

Charles A. Hinesley, 69, of Collierville, Tenn., was pronounced dead at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village shortly after rescue workers arrived. The official cause of death won't be known until an autopsy is performed, authorities said.

Firefighters and paramedics from Elk Grove Village and Itasca responded to the scene on the side of the highway, where Hinesley's pickup truck landed after the accident.

"Whatever incident he suffered, the motorist drove across all lanes, not hitting anyone, then hit an aluminum light pole," Sellers said. "As he was leaving the roadway he went down through a gully along the side of the road and, when the vehicle came to rest along the fence, it was completely covered by trees and debris. We had to gain access to him by using chain saws to cut paths to the truck."

Because of the debris, rescue workers had to extricate Hinesley from the roof of his truck, which was carrying a 20-foot, white trailer with new furniture inside. Several witnesses were waiting at the scene when rescue workers arrived, Sellers said, and they identified the location of the vehicle. One witness who identified himself as a doctor told paramedics the victim was already without a pulse, Sellers said.
