Garage sale to benefit troops overseas

Roxanne Monarrez has organized a few successful garage sales for herself, so she decided to use her skills to help others.

The incoming president of the Carol Stream American Legion Post 76's Ladies Auxiliary, Monarrez is overseeing a garage sale to raise money to help our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and those hospitalized in Germany.

"Half of the proceeds will go to our Take a Soldier to the Movies project," Monarrez said about the ongoing auxiliary project that sends DVDs, popcorn and movie candy overseas. "They deserve something when they are out there," she said.

The other half of the proceeds will help provide much needed items for injured soldiers who arrive at the hospitals with only what they have on their back.

Organized by legion and auxiliary members, the garage sale runs 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 25, at the post, 570 S. Gary Ave., Carol Stream.

The auxiliary will be selling clothes, knickknacks, toys, tools, housewares and other items donated by post members and those who have heard about the fundraiser at the Wednesday and Friday Legion Bingo events.

"There will be fantastic low prices and really nice stuff," Monarrez said of the items the auxiliary will be selling. "Everything will be priced to sell."

Spaces are available for those who wish to sell garage sale and craft items. However outside vendors cannot sell food or drinks as the auxiliary will be selling grilled hot dogs and hamburgers and baked goods. Monarrez also made it very clear that vendors cannot sell illegal paraphernalia of any kind.

The cost for each 8-by-10-foot space is $20; spaces can be reserved by calling Monarrez at (630) 890-4061. Anyone who would like to donate items also should call.

The ladies' goal is to raise at least $2,000, allowing them to continue with their many projects.

"I am such a believer in the American Legion raising money for our soldiers," Monarrez said. "It is just a little part that I can do to make their life a little easier while they are fighting for me."
