Appraisal Fair looks at your secret treasures

Have you ever wondered the true value of the vase you inherited, or the old tools you found in your parents' shed? Are you curious as to how much your childhood toys or other novelties are worth?

If so, Carol Stream Historical Society's Appraisal Fair on Saturday, April 18, will be a must-attend event.

Mark Valle, member of the American Society of Appraisers, will provide attendees with value information for their glassware, china, jewelry, silver, small pieces of furniture and other items.

Appraisals will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon at the Historic Farmhouse, 301 Lies Road. The fee is $10 per item, with a limit of two items per person. Stamps, coins, weapons and large pieces of furniture will not be appraised.

Additionally, this is the perfect opportunity to visit the Historic Farmhouse with its displays featuring mementos from yesteryear.

"This venue is another opportunity to showcase our house," historical society member Barbara O'Rahilly said.

And with this year commemorating Carol Stream's 50th anniversary, such an event is a perfect fit, especially because appraisal fair proceeds will provide money for the ongoing farmhouse restoration.

A limited number of appraisal applications are available by calling (630) 665-0686 or (630) 681-7562 or visiting carolstreamhistorical.com. However, depending on the number of people registered in advance, walk-ins may be accommodated the day of the event referred to as the historical society's version of the "Antiques Roadshow."

Also, as part of our 50th anniversary celebration, the historical society will sponsor the Heritage Tour, a bus tour highlighting the village's first 50 years and even before it being developed by the late Jay Stream.

"It's the society's way of contributing to the 50th anniversary celebration," O'Rahilly said.

The tour, narrated by historical society members, will be in conjunction with the Summer in the Center festival on June 7. The bus will depart at 2 p.m. from the Town Center, corner of Lies Road and Gary Avenue. It will continue throughout the village past key sites including St. Stephen's Cemetery, the original section of town, and many areas that are significant pieces of our village's history.

"This tour will be interesting for those who have lived here a long time as well as our newer residents," O'Rahilly said.

Due to limited seating, O'Rahilly recommends making reservations now by calling her at (630) 665-0686. Those interested in joining the historical society also may call O'Rahilly.

The historical society thanks the Carol Stream Park District for the use of its bus.
