Man accidentally shoots self in hand at Dundee Twp. gun store
Police say a man accidentally shot himself in the hand Tuesday while target practicing at a Dundee Township gun store, then lied about how it happened.
Kane County sheriff's deputies were called to Gat Guns, 14N915 Route 25, at 2:53 p.m. for a report of a person injured.
At the scene, a man told police he had just finished firing and was removing the magazine from a .45-caliber handgun when the weapon discharged a bullet through one of his hands.
The man, whose identity was not released, was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin where he was "conscious and awake but embarrassed about what happened," police said in a report.
But then he changed his story. At the hospital, police said, the man broke down into tears and admitted the gun went off after he grabbed it by the barrel.
Police told the man he should have been honest from the beginning as there was nothing criminal about either set of circumstances. He was not charged.
