Special worship, brunch, reception precede pastor's installation service

The Rev. Dernard D. Newell will be installed as pastor of Logan Street Baptist Church in Batavia at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 29 at the Wheaton Christian Center in Carol Stream. The event is the culmination of a week filled with activities.

The predominantly African-American church welcomed Newell in December. Newell, 43, received his Master of Divinity degree from Garret Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston. He also has a law degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C. and came to Chicago in 1996 to work for the Cook County state's attorney's office. He stopped practicing law to devote himself to the ministry.

"Religion is not only about ritual but about relationships," he told the Daily Herald during a January interview.

The congregation is hosting special worship services at the church at 908 N. River St. in Batavia. The Rev. D. Darrell Griffin from Oakdale Covenant Church in Chicago will preach at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 24. The Rev. Spencer from Main Baptist Church in Aurora will preach at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 26.
