Kankakee records first homicide of 2008

KANKAKEE -- Less than a week before the end of the year, police in the north-central Illinois community of Kankakee have recorded their first homicide of 2008.

Kankakee police early Saturday found 23-year-old Ryan Graefnitz of Manteno lying in an apartment house parking lot with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Officials say they're searching for two "persons of interest." Kankakee Police Chief Mike Kinkade says investigators are also interviewing witnesses.

The 6-foot-5 Graefnitz played basketball at Manteno High School and Prairie State College, where he was on the honor roll.

His death was both the first homicide in Kankakee this year and the first in Kankakee County.
