Inverness bicyclist struck, killed

A 52-year-old Inverness man was pronounced dead at the scene after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a vehicle traveling the same direction on Roselle Road Thursday morning.

Jeffrey Herrell was bicycling north on the shoulder of Roselle Road between Central and Algonquin roads when he was struck shortly before 9:28 a.m., Cook County sheriff's police spokeswoman Penny Mateck said.

The incident remained under investigation late Thursday and no charges had been filed.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Herrell was a 23-year-old Hoffman Estates man.

That driver told police Herrell's bicycle had swerved from the shoulder, causing him to try to avoid hitting it by swerving himself, Mateck said.
