You can order a little liquid sunshine for winter

The leaves are falling and surprise snow storms have already hit the East Coast so by the time December rolls around we will be longing for sunshine and palm trees. I can't promise you a mild winter but with the help of the Dundee Township Rotary Club, I know where you will be able to find a little liquid sunshine.

For many years, the Rotary Club's big fundraiser has been its Gourmet Citrus Fruit Sale. The citrus fruit is hand-packed in cartons containing four-fifths of a bushel of fruit. Each box contains fruits of the same size and the number of fruits per box varies with size. Typically there are approximately 40 to 44 large sweet seedless navel oranges per carton and 30 to 36 refreshing juicy pink grapefruit per carton. The cost for a carton is $30 and $20 for a half carton and $25 if you would like a mixed oranges and grapefruit half carton.

Use fruit as a special gift for friends, family, business associates (or horde them for yourself). The fruit is delivered the beginning of December. To place your order, call Richard Manarchy at (847) 649-82 47, or cell (630) 659-6158, or fax (847) 649-8249.

This is a win/win way to support the Dundee Township Rotary, an organization that does so much for our community. These good people provide everything from a Halloween Party for kids with special needs, to Christmas with Santa for the under-privileged. It provides college scholarships and has been the leading force in creating the senior library at the Dundee Township Senior Center. They also support local agencies like the Boys and Girls Club of Dundee Township.

Winners named: Congratulations to the Sleepy Hollow Service Club for again providing the best Halloween festivities ever. The children were able to show off their costumes and get a little treat. The Headless Horseman made his nocturnal ride through the flames of the giant bonfire that was watched over safely by members of the Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District.

The Headless Horseman always enjoys this chance to mingle with the residents of Sleepy Hollow but he is always a bit sad because having no head he can't enjoy the flavorful delicacies cooked up for the pie contest and he couldn't inhale the delicious aromas filling the air from the chili contest. But we could - and also have a sample of them afterward as well.

Congratulations to the winners of the pie contest. Pat Ehmann won first prize for her delicious apple pie and also third place for her spicy pumpkin pie. Debbie Sellers took home second place for her Amish apple pie. Gentlemen took the lead in the chili contest with Paul McVicker taking first place with his "McChili" and Gary Kotlan came in second with his Chili Con Kotlan. Debbie Sellers proved that can do more than just pies by taking third place with her Sunday Football Chili. Sounds like we should all go over to her house to watch the next Bears game.

Festival of Trees: Now that you've taken down your Halloween decorations and are looking for some Christmas ideas, honorary chairmen Bill and Mickey Brown invite everyone to come see the Ecker Center for Mental Health's eighth annual Festival of Trees. Beautiful artificial Christmas trees and wreathes , sponsored and decorated by area businesses, organizations and individuals will be displayed until Friday, Nov. 7 at the Gail Borden Library , 270 N. Grove in downtown Elgin. The items will be available for purchase while on display.

The Ecker Center provides psychiatry and nursing services, 24-hour crisis response, psychosocial rehabilitation, case management, vocational support and individual and group therapy, as well as crisis and supervised residences to adults with mental illnesses. It is one of the agencies receiving support from our local Northwest Suburban United Way.
