Support a cure: Eat a hot dog
Eat a few hot dogs this weekend, and you might just help find a cure for breast cancer.
Wiener Take All in Buffalo Grove is holding a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Saturday.
The twist is that the restaurant is featured in a new book all about hot dogs. The author will also be on hand to sign books from 1 to 3 p.m., and 20 percent of book sales, plus 20 percent of the restaurant sales all day, will go to the foundation.
Drew Olbur, the owner of Wiener Take All, said funding breast cancer research has become important to him.
"I have unfortunately some friends through the community who are dealing with it," he said. "It's such an epidemic."
The book, "Never Put Ketchup on a Hot Dog," is written by Bob Schwartz, a Vienna Beef executive. It looks at several hot dog stands in the area and around the country.
"There's a nice section about us," Olbur said. "It talks about us being one of the mainstays of the northern suburbs."

Youth vote: Students and teachers at Buffalo Grove's Kilmer School will hold a mock election Oct. 20 to 30. Students will use an online voting system as part of the program, sponsored by the Youth Leadership Initiative.
Millions of students are expected to vote nationwide during the two-week period.
The students at Kilmer have been reading election stories and discussing the characteristics of a good president in each homeroom. Teachers have also been discussing voting rights and procedures.
The group has found that those who start in the process earlier tend to continue their political participation.
Fire safety: The Long Grove Fire Department hosts its first-ever Fire Safety Festival this weekend.
It will take place 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the fire station, 1165 Old McHenry Road.
The event will include free admission, goody bags, live music, a safety puppet show, station tour, K-9 demonstration and games, including an obstacle course.

Healthy living: The Wheeling board of health will hold a community health fair and open house this weekend.
It take places 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the park district Recreation Center, 333 W. Dundee Road.
The fair will include flu shots, anemia tests, glucose tests, blood pressure checks, spinal screenings and chair massages. The flu shots and anemia test cost $25 each. The glucose test cost $5. All other screenings are free.
