McLeods preparing for mayoral charity ball
Two dining rooms are stacked high with boxes, bags and gift envelopes in preparation for a charity fundraiser sequestered within the upcoming Hoffman Estates Mayoral Ball.
Behind the scene, efforts include sorting and labeling those gifts, restaurant dining certificates, hotel stays, sports memorabilia, jewelry and some surprises that fill the dining rooms of first couple Mayor Bill and Joane McLeod and prime helpers Victor and Mary Katis, who continue to accept donations for the ball's featured silent auction. With a goal of $25,000, an amount supporters hope surpasses last year's take by $3,000, the auction raises money for WINGS, Women in Need Growing Stronger.
The mayoral ball, at which McLeod plans to announce his re-election intention, is a black tie-optional dinner dance at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in the Stonegate Conference and Banquet Centre, 2401 W. Higgins Road, Hoffman Estates. The mayor will introduce his running mates Village Clerk Bev Romanoff and Trustees Karen Mills, Ray Kincaid and Jackie Green.
The charity, admittedly close to the hearts of the McLeods, became part of the ball festivities three years ago when $10,000 went to the organization that caters to abused women and children. It provides safe houses that harbor those whose traumatic circumstances leave them helpless and in distress.
In a candid moment, Joane McLeod revealed the couple's reason for selecting WINGS.
"We work with WINGS because my sister, Julie, was married to a violently abusive husband," Joane McLeod said. "She received no help when she needed it because she lived in an area that had no safe house. Bill and I made a commitment to help other people's loved ones by holding the benefit during the ball."
The mayor's ball is an occasion to welcome friends and supporters who want to celebrate the town's successes and growth, according to McLeod who awaits the village's 50th anniversary next year.
"The village grew tremendously in the last 50 years and I look forward to its further growth in the years ahead," McLeod said. "Personally, I consider it a privilege to serve our citizens as mayor and admit I am enthused about it every day."

"Joane and I consider it a privilege to assist WINGS' worthwhile cause," McLeod said. "The silent auction makes this more than just a political event; it helps a much-needed constituency."
