Firefighters honored for fundraising prowess
For 16 years, Buffalo Grove firefighters and village volunteers have been braving the heat and the traffic to collect money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The department has received the Golden Boot award for 12 years in a row and spent 10 years as the highest-collecting department in the state for the annual Fill the Boot campaign.
This year, the department surpassed the $200,000 mark and received a special recognition for that achievement.
The firefighters managed to collect a total of $27,259.90 this year. That included a $1,000 donation from the Chamber of Commerce, money collected during Buffalo Grove Days and various other donations given to volunteers collecting money at Lake-Cook and Arlington Heights roads.
"It shows the type of community Buffalo Grove is," Village President Elliott Hartstein said. "This is something we can be very, very proud of."
Register to vote: Wheeling will be holding a voter-registration drive next weekend.
The village hall will be open from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 4, for registration. Those interested must bring two pieces of identification with addresses on them. One of those needs to be a picture identification.
Voter registration for the November election closes on Tuesday, Oct. 7.

Super news: A groundbreaking for Superdawg in Wheeling will take place at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26.
The village of Wheeling first talked about bringing the world-famous restaurant to town last August. Plans are now set for the restaurant, and construction will start this week.
The ceremony will take place at 335 S. Milwaukee Ave. The restaurant is scheduled to be open by spring 2009.
Lunch for a cause: Several Long Grove merchants are joining together to host a luncheon during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Owners of Olivia's Past, Incas, Prairie Smoke Clothing Company, Trio and Cleo's will host the luncheon and fashion show from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Long Grove Cafe, 235 Robert Parker Coffin Road.
The store's models will be showcasing the latest fashions, jewelry, purses and shoes. Proceeds will go toward finding a cure for breast cancer.
The lunch and fashion show is $30 in advance and $35 at the door.
