Go Green party aims to raise awareness

Add Barrington's Jennifer Michaels Hair Salon to the growing list of area establishments going green.

On Saturday, Sept. 20, the salon, along with myearth360.com, is hosting its first Go Green party.

The event will have numerous environmentally friendly products on display, including biodegradable doggy waste bags, Get Clean nontoxic household products and reusable water bottles.

"We want to create some awareness in the community," said Michael Casavant, the salon's owner.

Besides the chance to check out all the different products, Casavant is also offering green hair extensions to his customers as a way to promote the green lifestyle.

"It is an educational opportunity," he said.

North Barrington's Lynn Hasselberger, owner of myearth360.com, said she started the business last year as a way to show the community what environmentally friendly options are out there.

With so many different avenues for going green, Hasselberger said you don't have to try everything at once.

"The message is, that with one step at a time, you can make a difference," she said.

This is not the first time Jennifer Michaels has given its clients the chance to brighten up their hair colors.

Last October, the salon raised more than $4,000 for beast cancer research by offering pink extensions. Casavant said they plan to have the same promotion next month.

Saturday's event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Jennifer Michaels Hair Salon, 421 N. Northwest Highway in Barrington.

Is it art or an eBay item? A new exhibit was recently unveiled at Barrington High School's Clair E. Smith Art Gallery.

Through Oct. 3, the gallery is displaying the work of Chicago artist Anne Karsten.

Most of her paintings have their beginnings from items for sale on the Internet auction site eBay. She fictionalizes the objects to mirror her observations on how people relate to things.

During the last two decades, Karsten has exhibited her works everywhere from Minnesota to Massachusetts to England. She recently received an award of distinction in the South Shore Arts' Salon Show.

The gallery is open during school days and on evening during performances.

For more information, call the school's fine arts office at (847) 842-3214.
