Buffalo Grove deals with salt shortage

Like many other towns in the area, Buffalo Grove has had to use some maneuvering to work around a salt shortage.

The village is paying $129 a ton for 4,000 tons of salt this year, compared to about $41 that it paid last year.

The cost this year will be $516,000.

Village Manager Bill Brimm said the state legislature is working on some action that might relieve some of the price, but, for now, Buffalo Grove needs to stock up.

No stranger to service: The Buffalo Grove Rotary gives out a special community service award each year that's named after former trustee Bill Reid.

This year, the award went to Richard Stone.

"Dick is no stranger in this community," said Rotary President Dan Wolf.

He said Stone has been a longtime volunteer for Kingswood United Methodist Church, the park district's Raupp Museum, Boy Scouts, the Community Emergency Response Team and the friends of the park, among other organizations.

"I thank Dick for his endless dedication to the village of Buffalo Grove," Wolf said.

Breaking ground: Wheeling broke ground on its new public works building on Aug. 25.

The 120,000-square-foot building at 77 W. Hintz Road will upgrade the storage space for the public works department and include three acres of outdoor storage for salt domes, a fuel island and equipment.

The building is expected to be complete by spring of 2009.

New car lot coming soon: A Saturn dealership in Buffalo Grove that will take place of Arlington Nissan, which recently moved into Arlington Heights, is expected to open by Sept. 30.

The opening of the Saturn was part of a deal to offset losses after the Nissan at 915 W. Dundee Road and a Chrysler Jeep both moved down the street into Arlington Heights territory.

Seeking food donations: As part of Live United Week in Buffalo Grove, which starts Sept. 22, the village will host a food drive through Sept. 29.

The items will be distributed to the Vernon and Wheeling Township food pantries.

The village is looking for donations of rice, peanut butter, beans, canned meats and stews, macaroni and cheese, cereal, canned fruits, soups and powdered and evaporated milk.

Items can be dropped off at village hall from 8 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Monday and until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to Friday.

For more information, call the village at (847) 459-2500.
