Carol Stream marketplace features Farmhouse
Craft items, antiques, flea market bargains, children's activities and a used-book sale are just a few of the plethora of offerings at the Carol Stream Historical Society's 5th annual Marketplace from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Historical Farmhouse, 301 Lies Road, Carol Stream.
"Our big thing, of course, is to let people know we are here," said Barbara O'Rahilly, a society member.
That's just one reason for holding this and other events at the Historic Farmhouse. Sharing the splendor of the Farmhouse, its many artifacts and the beautiful grounds is a priority as well.
Marketplace visitors will be able to tour the inside of the Farmhouse from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the event. There will even be an opportunity to take home a reminder of Carol Stream history by having a picture taken on the 1934 tractor located on the grounds. The picture fee is $1.
O'Rahilly also noted that another goal for its members is preservation, restoration and education.
"That's what we are trying to do for the community," said O'Rahilly, who recently spent a great deal of time cataloging artifacts collected through the years.
Other highlights of the day are free children's activities from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. when little ones can have their face painted, choose from a variety of temporary tattoos and get creative coloring sheets depicting the Farmhouse. One way to support the society's efforts to preserve Carol Stream history would be to purchase a beautiful, limited edition Christmas ornament featuring a picture of the Farmhouse. Ornaments will be sold for $5 and would certainly make a lovely addition to any Christmas tree or even a gift.
Of course the day would not be complete without refreshments so the society will be selling hot dogs, chips and cookies for a nominal fee.
There are still vendor spaces available for a $20 fee for crafters, antique dealers and those wishing to sell flea market items and home-based business representatives. Although there is not a specific deadline, it is recommended that interested parties contact Barb Tuman, flea market organizer, at (630) 665-8219 soon for an application. Space is limited. Applications also are available online at www.carolstreamhistorical.com.
Believe it or not, Carol Stream will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. With that in mind, hopefully more will join the historical society preparing for this special celebration. Even if you have only been a resident for a short time, you are welcome to join the Carol Stream Historical Society.
