Barrington Hills Polo Club invites all to match, fundraiser

Horses and the Barrington Hills Polo Club will be on display next month during the annual Kalaway Landowners Cup.

Hosted by the Riding Club of Barrington Hills and the Barrington Hills Polo Club, the event was created as a way to say "thank you" to all the local residents who allow riding trails across their properties. When combined, Barrington Hills has about 200 miles of horse trails.

This year's Kalaway Landowners Cup is scheduled for Sept. 6 at Oakwood Farms Polo Field, 250 Deepwood Road, just west of Bateman Road.

The event includes two fast-paced polo matches, featuring players from throughout the Chicago area.

The opening game pits an all-female team against an all-male team in the "Battle of the Sexes."

The feature match is the 4th annual Kalaway Landowners Cup, named for the late Ben Kalaway, a well-known horseman in Barrington Hills. He died in a 2005 car crash, while driving a fellow horseback rider home on Route 68.

The day will also feature a host of activities for kids.

The Lake Run Clydesdales will give rides in the bright red "beer wagon," the Fox River Valley Pony Club will demonstrate its skills and an antique calliope from the Sanfilippo collection will entertain. Children will also be able to explore "Dr. Pollina's Kids Kamp," sponsored by Russell Pollina, a pediatric dentist in Barrington.

The event is open to all. General admission is $15. Children under 12 are admitted for free. Field side tailgate parking spots are available for $75. Prizes will be awarded for the best tailgate parties.

In the past, the event has raised more than $10,000 for the riding club.
