First day of school's just around the corner in Dist. 220

It's Aug. 1 and that means the first day of school is right around the corner in Barrington. Actually, it's just 25 days for those counting.

To make sure everyone's prepared for the first day, Barrington Area Unit District 220 is holding a special registration day for all new students.

Registration at each school is scheduled for Aug. 7. Elementary schools will register new students from 8 to 11 a.m., with registration at the two middle schools taking place between 9 and 11 a.m.

High school students new to the district should call the Barrington High School Guidance Department at (847) 842-3233 to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

To enroll a new student, parents must submit a certified legal birth certificate (hospital and baptismal certificates aren't accepted), any previous school records and two proofs of residency in the district. Valid proofs of residency include a notarized lease, sales contract, mortgage deed, tax bill, current utility bill, food stamp issuance document, TANF or unemployment card, or a Medicaid card.

Students must also shown proof they've met physical and dental exam and immunization requirements as outlined by the Illinois Department of Health. Students who don't comply won't be allowed to start school.

Night out: Another sign summer is nearly over is Tuesday's 25th annual National Night Out celebration.

The Barrington-Inverness Police Department and the Barrington Park District host the annual event as a way to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and generate support for local anti-crime efforts. It takes place at 6:30 p.m. at Citizens Park.

From 6:30 to 9 p.m., all area residents are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening with neighbors and police at Citizens Park.

Besides the crime-fighting activities, the event will also include a concert by "the Only Sons" at 7 p.m., food and free giveaways. The concert is the last in this year's summer concert series hosted by the Barrington Park District.

Nationwide, more than 35 million people, in 11,0000 communities, in all 50 states will participate in this year's event, which is sponsored by National Association of Town Watch.

For more information, call the Barrington-Inverness Police Department at (847) 304-3300 or visit the park district's Web site at barringtonparkdistrict.org.
