Eagle Scout project clears up forest preserve
The Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve will look a little nicer this spring thanks to an Eagle Scout project.
John Huber, 16, decided to expand a project he had been working on with members of his troop 401, based out of Kingswood United Church in Buffalo Grove.
Huber spend the first two weekends in June cutting down invasive plants and trees in Old Popp Farm with the help of 15 other Scouts and 10 adults.
Gulo's Pizza Paddle and Wa-Pa-Ghetti's provided pizza to the volunteers.
Huber completed his project at the end of June, when he scattered native plant and flower seeds in the area that was cleared. In the fall, the fire department plans on doing a controlled burn of the brush piles.
Residents who want to help with the conservation work can volunteer on designated days through the Lake County Forest Preserve. The work will continue from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 24 and Sept. 21.

Spend the night out: National Night Out is coming up on Aug. 5, and both Wheeling and Buffalo Grove have outdoors events planned for the evening.
The night is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, and many communities choose to showcase their departments and have block parties.
Buffalo Grove will have an event at Willow Stream Park, 651 Old Checker Road.
Wheeling's event consists of numerous block parties held throughout town. The police and fire departments plan to stop at all the gatherings. For more information, contact Officer Scott Laverd at (847) 459-2994.
Know your beat: The Wheeling Police Department holds a series of beat meetings every month to let the community know about crime in town.
The meetings are held in the council chambers of village hall, 301 W. Dundee Road, at 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month.
For August, the topic of discussion will be personal safety. In September, it will be identify theft; a guest speaker will come by in October; holiday safety will be discussed in November; and the department will talk about winter storm safety in December.

Sizzling event: The Wheeling Park District will hold its annual Summer Sizzle from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday. The event will include an outdoor barbecue with games, such as Wiffle golf ball driving, baggo, bocce ball and slingo. Burger, hot dogs and other refreshments will be available.
