Camps at ECC offer options for almost all kids

Parents, treat your children to a fun summer at Elgin Community College.

ECC will hold a series of kids camps this summer to stimulate and satisfy children's passion for art, entertainment, academic enrichment and nature.

Beginning June 16, children ages 2 to 17 can participate in a variety of camps from Monday through Thursday at ECC's main campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

On Friday, children spend a day at the Einstein Academy, 747 Davis Road, Elgin, participating in academic enrichment classes to keep them sharp in their core subjects.

Camps include:

Art and Nature Camp, Monday-Friday June 16-20. In this camp, children will create science experiments involving the weather, explore northern Illinois' many eco-regions, build their own mosaic sculpture and uncover the mysteries of Native American folklore and art.

Lights, Camera, Action Camp, Monday-Friday June 23-27. Children shine in this camp by creating their own entertainment, props, glamorous bling or cultural artifacts worthy of a movie set. During the afternoon, they will participate in an acting camp playing theater games, experimenting with improv comedy, creating choreography, learning how to audition, taking the lead in a commercial, and replicating their favorite acting scenes.

Going, Going, Going Green Camp, Monday-Friday July 7-11, children will learn about going green, becoming a responsible steward of the earth's resources and putting ecological practices into action. They will explore healthy eating by joining one of ECC's chefs to make healthy green foods. Other topics include water conservation, trash control, reducing carbon monoxide output, backyard composting and learning from other cultures. Recycling trash into art will be featured along with a tour of ECC's greenhouse to discover how to filter dirty water into drinkable water, using aquatic plants you can grow at home.

Celebration Camp, Monday through Friday, July 14-18. This camp helps children make new friends and includes a weeklong celebration in which participants attend clown school, learning how to make crazy balloon animals and do the goofy stunts and tricks that clowns do. Children also will learn how to create party decorations from items found in their backyards; work with one of ECC's chefs to make and eat party foods; and learn how other cultures celebrate.

Einstein Fridays, Fridays, June 20-Aug. 8, children stay sharp in their core subjects, attending enrichment classes in reading, writing, math and science. These classes will strengthen what they learned in school last year and build their confidence for the year ahead. No sessions are held on July 4.

Parents have the option of choosing a full-time or part-time schedule for the kids camps, whichever works best with their schedules. Morning and afternoon sessions can be mixed and matched in any combination. Monday to Thursday sessions cost $40 per day (including supervised lunch), or $20 for each morning and afternoon session (no supervised lunch).

Einstein Fridays are $50 per day and includes supervised lunch. The cost to attend each weekly camp costs $200 per camper. Einstein Fridays and a supervised lunch are included in the package.
