14 years later, still no answers

A Friday night in the summer of 1993 was the perfect time for Carmen Charneco to hang out with friends -- but not all night.

There was too much at stake.

The Carpentersville woman had just received a hard-earned high school diploma and recently landed a new job answering phones at an Elgin home-improvement store.

And now that Charneco had stopped dating her ex-convict boyfriend, the 18-year-old was determined to carve out a successful life for herself and unborn son.

She never got the chance.
