Bring your shotgun for Post 76's turkey shoot

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, an unusual way to pick up a turkey or ham is American Legion Post 76's annual Turkey Shoot fundraiser.

"We hand it (turkey or ham) to you right there," said Deldon Miller, post member and former post commander.

This year's event begins at 9:30 a.m. Sunday and Nov. 18, rain or shine, at the post, 570 S. Gary Ave., Carol Stream. Doors open at 8 a.m. and the event continues until dusk.

"We have tremendous crowds," Miller said. "Come early and stay late."

This fundraiser is open to all ages. Even youngsters enjoy themselves at what has become a fun family event for the past 25 or so years.

The post will gladly supply shotguns for anyone who does not have one; however, participants are welcome to bring all gauges except 10-gauge shotguns. The post provides the ammo at a cost of $2 per round, with three prizes per round making the odds pretty good.

If you need a little nourishment during the day, the ladies' auxiliary will offer a luncheon menu featuring member Patricia Griffin's famous chili. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a minimal cost.

This year's featured raffle prize is a 12-gauge shotgun.

"It's a beauty," Miller said.

According to Miller, proceeds from this post fund-raiser go to the veterans and veterans' affairs.

Santa's arrival

For all Carol Stream residents, once you have enjoyed your Thanksgiving meal, keep in mind that Santa will be arriving Nov. 23 at the Village Town Center, Lies Road and Gary Avenue.

The festivities begin with caroling in preparation for Santa's arrival at 6:30 p.m. Donations of nonperishable canned or boxed goods for the Northwest DuPage Walk-in Ministry Food Pantry or new or gently-used toys for the Carol Stream Police Department Christmas Sharing program will be gratefully accepted.

In return, everyone will be treated to hot cocoa and holiday cookies, and the children will receive a complimentary Polaroid picture with Santa.
