Oakton Community College celebrating Black History Month

Oakton Community College is hosting public events to celebrate Black History Month in February.

They include film screenings, workshops and other activities. Events are being held virtually and at Oakton's main campus, 1600 E. Golf Road in Des Plaines.

"Black History Month is a time to give reverence and reflection on the leadership, creativity, and fearlessness of our elders, such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Toni Morrison," said Danielle Terry, Oakton's equity coordinator for the Building Lasting African Culture and Knowledge student program.

"Now is the time for all of us to glean from those leaders."

Scheduled activities include:

• A screening and discussion of the film "Queen & Slim," set for 3 p.m. Feb. 14.

• A Zoom program called "Is There a Future for Me in Comics? Finding Your Community: The Importance of Connecting with BIPOCs in Nerd Spaces." It's set for 4 p.m. Feb. 15.

• A Zoom screening and discussion of the film "Coding With Bias," set for 4:30 p.m. Feb. 22.
