Lyric 2022-23 season includes two world premieres plus 'Carmen' and 'Ernani' revivals
The Lyric Opera of Chicago's 2022-23 season features two world premieres, three new-to-Chicago imports and three revivals.
The Lyric's previous tradition of producing a postseason Broadway musical also returns with a revival of its hit 2019 production of "West Side Story" from June 3 to 25, 2023.
The Lyric's 2022-23 season features:
• Verdi's "Ernani" (five performances, Sept. 9-Oct. 1): Naperville native Tamara Wilson stars in the leading soprano role of Elvira in this season-opening revival conducted by Italian Lyric music director Enrique Mazzola.
• "Fiddler on the Roof" (11 performances, Sept. 17-Oct. 7): Director Barrie Kosky, one of the masterminds behind this season's hit run of "The Magic Flute," explored his own Eastern European Jewish roots for this acclaimed 2017 Berlin production of the beloved Broadway musical.
• Verdi's "Don Carlos" (five performances, Nov. 9-25): Mazzola conducts the Lyric premiere of the original five-act French version of Verdi's tragic masterpiece inspired by 16th-century Spanish history. The production is by Sir David McVicar.
• Rossini's "Le Comte Ory" (five performances, Nov. 13-26): Tenor Lawrence Brownlee returns as a nobleman who infiltrates a nunnery in this Lyric premiere of Rossini's French comedy. Mazzola conducts the imported Metropolitan Opera production by Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher.
• Humperdinck's "Hansel & Gretel" (six performances, Jan. 25-Feb. 5, 2023): Former Lyric music director Sir Andrew Davis returns to conduct a revival this classic 1893 German opera.
• Will Liverman and King Rico's "The Factorum" (five performances, Feb. 3-12 at Millennium Park's Harris Theater for Music and Dance): Rossini's comedy "The Barber of Seville" gets a rethinking, as it is reset in a barbershop on Chicago's South Side, for this world premiere.
• Bizet's "Carmen" (eight performances, March 11-April 7): Ryan Opera Center alumna J'Nai Bridges stars in the title role for this revival conducted by Henrik Nanasi.
• "Proximity: a trio of new American operas" (five performances, March 24-April 8): This trio of world-premiere operas tackle serious contemporary issues.
