Noted muralist brings first foray into sculpture to Rosemont mall

Kate Lewis' murals can be found along the Chicago Riverwalk, within Wrigley Field, and on sides of buildings in New Buffalo, Michigan, and Las Vegas.

Now, the self-taught Chicago artist's first foray into sculpture is on display at the Fashion Outlets of Chicago in Rosemont.

"Working in this new medium has been an entirely different experience from creating murals," Lewis said in a news release about the three-dimensional works on the mall's second floor.

"Sitting inside the art while forming it stretches our brains in a way that excites us for future possibilities."

The three sculptural works - named "Functional Art" - use Styrofoam, plaster, latex paint and varnish, and were drawn to the look of Art Deco and Modern furniture styles, officials said.

Thinking of an adult playground, Lewis said she designed the sculptures like a large children's puzzle that could be deconstructed and displayed as separate pieces.

Individually, the pieces are titled "Candle Holder," "Cup Holder" and "Pencil Holder 3."

The works, which are on display through the end of the year, are a rotating exhibition of the shopping center's THE COLLECTION: Where Art Meets Fashion contemporary art program.
