Full slate of community events on tap in Rolling Meadows

After the pandemic-forced cancellation of most events in 2020, the Rolling Meadows Community Events Foundation and city officials have a full slate of local gatherings on the 2021 calendar, from concerts and festivals to community dinners and the annual tree lighting.

It all kicked off last weekend with an abbreviated Memorial Day parade and ceremony, and the first City Market of the year.

Organizers are now getting ready for the annual Block Party on Central Road in front of Rolling Meadows High School, scheduled from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 11.

Jet Set 4 will perform from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., and American English from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. There will also be food trucks, market vendors, kids activities, and a police dog demonstration and vehicle show.

The next week, the FRIDAYS ROCK! & Roll in Meadows concert series kicks off at Kimball Hill Park with 1980s cover band Hi Infidelity. The Friday, June 18, show is from 7 to 10 p.m., with additional concerts planned for July 9 and Sept. 10.

Following the first City Market last Saturday outside Rolling Meadows Community Church, 2720 Kirchoff Road, subsequent markets are scheduled for June 26, July 17, Aug. 28 and Sept. 25.

The July 4 parade will be back, stepping off from the high school at 11:30 a.m. and ending in the Jewel parking lot. City officials are collecting parade applications through June 18 from residents, businesses, organizations, clubs and school groups, available at cityrm.org.

The city council in April also approved funding for a bigger fireworks show, scheduled for 9:15 p.m. July 4 behind the Community Center along Pheasant Drive.

Other 2021 events include Wine-Down by the Creek Friday, Aug. 13; a senior luncheon Tuesday, Sept. 7; Hometown Hoedown Fall Fest Saturday, Oct. 2; the new Halloween Kick-Off on Kirchoff Saturday, Oct. 30; veterans dinner Friday, Nov. 5; and tree lighting and spaghetti dinner Thursday, Dec. 2.
