Dining events: WhirlyBall returns with Fun Daze promotion Friday

Baseball is back, and so is Whirlyball in Naperville, Vernon Hills and Chicago. Whirlyball is celebrating the Cubs home opener Friday, July 24, with a Fun Daze package featuring one hour of WhirlyBall, bowling or laser tag and unlimited pizza for $20 per person. Even better, the Cubs vs. Brewers game at 6:10 p.m. Friday will be broadcast throughout the venues. The package is available by reservation only. Plus, guests must wear masks in common areas, and there are new social distancing markers and barriers throughout the space plus increased disinfecting between groups.

Deli time

Craving a deli sandwich? How about one from Manny's Cafeteria & Delicatessen? You're in luck as the famous Chicago deli is making some suburban deliveries if you order through Tock. Che Figata's new Culinary University

Tired of cooking the same old recipes over and over again? Give your cooking a boost by attending one of Che Figata's new Culinary University cooking classes for adults and kids. During the first adult class, at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 25, Executive Chef Austin Fausett will teach participants how to make gnocchi with hearth-roasted vegetables. The $55 class includes the gnocchi, a salad and a glass of prosecco. The second class, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, features Chef Fausett demonstrating how to make mozzarella balls and how to select ingredients from your garden to make a salad. It's $40. The third class, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, features hands-on pasta-making, plus a salad and a glass of prosecco for $65. Classes are limited to 10. Masks must be worn except for when eating or drinking, and social distancing will be expected.

Just for kids, Che Figata is offering three classes, starting with Cooking 101 at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 30. Chef Laura Legault will teach kids how to follow a recipe, measure ingredients and use kitchen tools to make a cannoli. It's $25. For the second class, at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, Chef Tom Marquez and his daughter will teach kids how to make a family-size lasagna recipe to serve four to six. It costs $40. And at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, Chef Austin will show kids how to make Che Figata's Roman-style pizza, which they can then eat at the conclusion of the $25 class.

Let's do brunch

Miss getting together with friends for brunch? You're in luck as The Clubhouse in Oak Brook is bringing back brunch starting Sunday, July 26. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays, brunchers will be able to dine on Clubhouse favorites such as made-to-order omelets, bourbon-glazed ham, banana walnut French toast, vodka pasta, chicken-andouille jambalaya, oysters on the half shell from the raw bar, fresh fruit, assorted pastries, desserts and more. But be prepared, as things won't look like they did pre-pandemic. Now, all food will be served by a staff member wearing a mask and gloves at individual serving stations. Additional staff members will direct foot traffic in and out of the buffet area to allow one guest at a time per serving station for social-distancing purposes. For now, parties will be limited to tables of 10 or less. Brunch is $36 for adults, $15 for kids 6-12 and free for kids younger than 5. Reservations, while not required, are strongly encouraged.

Chef Stefan Markov, who recently took over the helm at The Chocolate Sanctuary in Gurnee, is hosting his first chef's wine dinner from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 29. Dine on a cornucopia of dishes, including sticky pork ribs, popcorn cauliflower, spaghetti carbonara, surf and turf, and housemade lavender ice cream with candied basil sprinkles and a fruit tart. Reservations are required for the $45 dinner.

It's time to celebrate summer, and what better way than with a Summertime Martini Flight on Wednesdays in July at Elgin's Martini Room. The $15 flight features four mini martinis, including the Rose Ruby Red, watermelon cucumber, The Campfire and the cheesecake martini. If you'd prefer to order cocktails to-go, Martini Room has quite a selection to choose from, including martinis, margaritas, cocktail kits (check out the BFF Package featuring a guava martini, a mimosa burst cocktail, a very berry martini, a bottle of Barefoot Bubble Brut Cuvee, berry garnish and two martini glasses for $63.75), sangria, beer and more.
