Works of Barrington fashionista featured in new exhibit

Longtime Barrington fashionista and fabric shop owner Dyllis Braithwaite will be featured in an exhibit of her classical wearable art creations starting this weekend in St. Charles.

Nicknamed "The Material Girl," the 92-year-old Braithwaite is known for using powerful colors, patterns and textures in her garments.

Fine Line Creative Arts Center at 37W570 Bolcum Road in St. Charles will highlight Braithwaite's work in the "We Love What You're Wearing" exhibit featuring about 40 of her timeless creations. An opening reception with Braithwaite is set from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, with the exhibit running through March 21 at Fine Line.

"I'm thrilled that I was chosen to share my wearable art creations at this beautiful arts center," Braithwaite said.

From sundresses to fur coats, Braithwaite wore the clothing she sewed while operating her downtown Barrington fine fabrics business. She also wrote books such as the two-volume "Oh! I Love What You're Wearing."

Braithwaite managed Finn's Fabrics for a short time before purchasing the business. Citing health reasons, she closed Finn's Fabrics by Dyllis in 2008 after a 40-year run.

Daughter Ann Braithwaite said she's excited that her mother is being recognized for her creativity and talent.

"When I was growing up in Barrington, people came to her fabric store from all around the region because they knew she had style, taste and an ability to help them to find that in themselves," Ann Braithwaite said. "Because of her passion and ability to bring people together, it became a gathering place for a community of creative folks.

"She's a visionary who has inspired so many people to find joy in their creativity and express themselves through their clothing. I'm so proud of all that she's accomplished."

Dyllis Braithwaite and her husband, longtime municipal attorney William, were honored by the Barrington village board in September as they prepared to depart their hometown of 56 years to live with their son in another suburb. The couple have been married since 1951.

William Braithwaite, 91, still practices law. He was at Barrington village hall for a matter before the plan commission last month.
