Lizzadro Museum to reopen at new Oak Brook site

The Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art is reopening to the public Nov. 12 in a new and improved space at 1220 Kensington Road in Oak Brook.

The museum moved earlier this year from its longtime home in Elmhurst's Wilder Park.

The reopening gives visitors the opportunity to rediscover the wonders of lapidary art - hand carved stone, minerals and gemstones - and will include the launch of a new Chang jade exhibition, featuring a rare, 5-foot pagoda from the 1933 Chicago World's Fair.

"We're thrilled to welcome visitors to experience our new location in Oak Brook," museum Director Dorothy Asher said. "With improved exhibits and more space for educational programs, private rentals and a dedicated research library, our new home better equips us to share our unique collection of lapidary art with a new generation of art enthusiasts and museum goers."

"With the grand reopening of Lizzadro Museum in Oak Brook, we're proud to support such a terrific organization that will allow visitors to not only have fun discovering gem treasures, but learn about earth science and rocks and minerals from around the world," said David Carlin, president & CEO of the Greater Oak Brook Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to space for special exhibits and educational activities, the new location offers additional free parking and houses the entire collection on one floor, improving accessibility for guests.

The Oak Brook location also features a 1,000-square-foot multipurpose room that is available to rent for a range of special events. With large windows, an adjoining patio overlooking a scenic park, and state-of-the-art LED screen, the rental space is a memorable setting for any special private event.

The museum opened in Elmhurst in 1962 and housed one of the largest collections of lapidary art in the world, courtesy of founder and lapidary collector Joseph Lizzadro.

It has remained a family-run institution since, with deep roots in the greater Chicagoland area.
