It begins with the Chicago-area premiere of "The Effect" (Oct. 13-Nov. 23), Lucy Prebble's drama about two people participating in an antidepressant drug trial who may or may not be falling in love. That's followed by a remount of the company's original adaptation of Eric Kimmel's "Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins" (December), in which Hershel tries to outsmart goblins haunting the old synagogue. The season, which includes a winter 2020 production to be announced, concludes with the premiere of Brian James Polak's "Welcome to Keene, New Hampshire" (April 16-May 30, 2020). Produced in cooperation with Pure Theatre in South Carolina, the play is a contemporary riff on Thornton Wilder's "Our Town," in which Keene's residents grapple with guns, opioids and other issues. Performances take place at 1802 W. Berenice Ave., Chicago. Subscriptions range from $42 to $123. (773) 644-1380 or strawdog.org.

• Three world premieres comprise The New Colony's 2019-2020 season, which commences Nov. 13 with "Peg," a co-production with Broken Nose Theatre of Liam Fitzgerald's play about a couple preparing to "flip the script" sexually. That's followed by "Under the Tree" (April 1-May 3, 2020), ensemble member K.L. Parker's play about a widow preparing for her husband's funeral, who meets his second family, which she knew nothing about. The season concludes with "Other Rockpools" (July 15-Aug. 15, 2020), co-artistic director Fin Coe's play, set in 2001. It's about a team of people who work to build a time machine that will send them to another era, but whose relationships deteriorate as the machine nears completion. Tickets go on sale in August.
