Tivoli Theatre hosts 12 days of special movie screenings

Ah yes, the age-old question: Is “Die Hard” a Christmas movie? The programmers at the Tivoli Theatre, 5021 Highland Ave., Downers Grove, are firmly in the “yes” camp.

The original 1988 action classic starring Bruce Willis is one of the highlights of the Twelve Days of Tivoli movie series that runs from Friday, Dec. 7, to Tuesday, Dec. 18. Screenings cost $5 per movie ($25 for the entire series). In some instances, holiday favorites are paired with another popular movie featuring the same actor — so you can see Bill Murray in “Scrooged,” his satirical riff on “A Christmas Carol,” and also in “Ghostbusters.”

The fun begins Friday with Tom Hanks in both “The Polar Express” and “Forrest Gump,” as well as a late-night screening of the 1983 comedy favorite “Trading Places,” in which a down-and-out Dan Aykroyd hilariously (and disgustingly) eats a raw fish concealed inside a dirty Santa suit.

Other featured holiday films include “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation,” “Home Alone,” the 1947 version of “Miracle on 34th Street,” and 1945's “Christmas in Connecticut” starring Barbara Stanwyck. Stanwyck also appears in one of the non-holiday offerings, the film-noir classic “Double Indemnity.” The lineup is rounded out by two bona fide classics: “The Godfather” and “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.”
