Local company quickly updates kitchen cabinets

Dimitris Nacopoulos has been the owner of suburban Chicago's Bath Planet dealership for 19 years, renovating and modernizing home bathtubs and showers. In 2017, Nacopoulos decided to expand his business by performing a similar service in home kitchens.

Through the Kitchen Planet business he founded, Nacopoulos and his kitchen manager, Larry Kron, are now transforming home kitchens with a minimum of mess, time and cost.

With the help of Nacopoulos and Kron, homeowners who are tired of the look of their kitchen can now find an economical solution from a local company. Kitchen Planet, based in Bartlett, updates kitchens with new cabinet faces, countertops, sinks and plumbing.

"The majority of our kitchen customers - about 80 percent - are choosing to reface their dark kitchen cabinets with white or some other light color or wood tone," said Jessie Northrop, office manager. "This is especially true of those with small kitchens that look even smaller when the cabinets are dark."

The process involves installing entirely new cabinet doors - often in different styles and profiles than before - and covering all of the surrounding cabinet framing with thermo-foiling to match the doors.

"No one would ever know that it hadn't always looked like that and our crews are not ripping apart your entire kitchen," she added.

When it comes to countertops, Kitchen Planet customers are generally choosing a marble or granite-look laminate or an actual granite, quartz or marble slab.

"We bring small samples out to our customers and eight out of 10 will choose from those samples. The others will go to a granite or marble warehouse and choose their own slab. Then, we will work with that vendor, give them the measurements and pick up the countertops after they are cut and fabricated. Our crews do the installations," she explained.

Northrop said many customers choose light-colored countertop materials to go with their light-colored or white cabinets.

The final piece of the kitchen puzzle, in most cases, is the installation of a new sink and faucet. Most customers are choosing single bowl stainless steel sinks, which don't scratch as easily as ceramic sinks and are larger enough to handle large pans. They are generally paired with an arched faucet that comes equipped with an integral sprayer.

"If you are embarrassed to have your family see your ugly old kitchen this holiday season," Kron said, "Kitchen Planet can renovate it and turn it into a dream kitchen in as little as three to five days."

Older kitchen cabinets, characterized by exposed hinges, ugly and scratched doors in outdated colors, can be quickly transformed using modern wood doors with hidden hinges in solid stained or painted woods like oak, maple or cherry. Aging laminate counters can be replaced with quartz, granite, Corian or Staron.

Kitchen Planet can also affordably replace sinks and faucets and simply reface the kitchen cabinet frames around the doors.
