Cinco de Mayo + Kentucky Derby = all-day fun at several suburban restaurants and bars

With Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby both falling on Saturday, there will be no shortage of parties at several suburban bars and restaurants. Mix in some good weather, and you're set for a fun time.

Here are some specials, viewing parties and events happening this weekend.

A Toda Madre

A Toda Madre's hybrid Mexican dishes are crafted with sharing in mind, perfect for Cinco de Mayo Saturday. Try the Volcanes, made with a crispy shell, crab meat salpicon, avocado, cilantro, serrano, onion and chipotle salsa, or the Barbacoa Tacos with short rib baked in banana leaves, cabbage, salsa verde, avocado and serrano-lime vinaigrette. Pay attention to the housemade cocktails and margaritas, too.

Cheers to starting Cinco de Mayo early. Bahama Breeze will be serving its classic margaritas for $5 now through Saturday, May 5. The fruit-flavored margaritas, which start at $8.99, include hibiscus, mango, tamarind, strawberry and the new mighty blood orange.

From 4 p.m. to close, drink specials include $1 off Corona and Corona Light beers and $1 floaters to top a margarita. On Saturday, Chuy's celebrates Cinco de Mayo with all-day drink specials on domestic beers, house Texas Martinis and margaritas made with fresh-squeezed lime juice. Now through May 13, Gene & Georgetti is serving bourbon libations inspired by the Kentucky Derby to benefit Storybook Farm, an equine riding facility that helps children faced with physical, emotional, social and cognitive challenges. First, choose your bourbon ($10 to $16), including Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve and Hudson Baby Bourbon. Then have it mixed into a cocktail such as a classic Mint Julep, Old Fashion or Manhattan. Or try the bourbons in a Bourbon Sour, with fresh lemon, sugar and cherry; a Revolver with Tia Maria coffee liqueur, a dash of orange juice and orange twist; a Bourbon Snap, with Peach Schnapps, Canton ginger liqueur and orange juice; or the Boulevardier, the American Negroni. There's also the Royal Reese, made with bourbon, Chambord, muddled mint, sugar and ginger beer. It's named after Reese, the horse owned by equestrian and Gene & Georgetti managing partner Michelle Durpetti. A portion of the proceeds from these cocktails will go to Storybook Farm, where Reese is currently residing.

In time for Cinco de Mayo, Perry's Steakhouse is mixing up a new limited-time twist on the traditional margarita that incorporates a Mexican wine and a Mexican tequila. The Rita Rosé Olé is a wine-based cocktail made with Casa Madero Rosé wine and Codigo 1530 Rosa Tequila. It's available through May 10 for $15.

Quiubo - slang for “what's up?” - is another option for Cinco de Mayo. Sharing is the name of the game here. Try the pulpo tacos made with zarandeado-style octopus and crispy potatoes or the chilaquiles, featuring tortilla chips simmered in morita-epazote salsa, fried egg, pork belly, onion, crema and queso fresco.
