This is equity?

Political proponents of the sweeping reform of the Illinois criminal justice system, including the Illinois Pretrial Fairness Act, assure the public that the abolishment of cash bail in Illinois will not pose a personal safety threat to the citizens of Illinois. Defendants will still be detained when the charge is a crime of violence.

Yet, the new law now provides that one who commits an assault upon another will not be arrested but issued a citation. Therefore, claimed victims of assaults may be able to meet up with the ticketed assaulter the same day.

Advocates of the reform maintain that these pretrial measures will ensure equity within the Illinois criminal justice system.

Ensure equity for whom?
