Secretary of state appointments helped
Recent letters describe the difficulty getting appointments for a driver's license in the new secretary of state program. I agree that more emphasis is needed in training and sorting through those problems. Once past that issue, the process inside the facilities is vastly improved in our experience.
Both my wife and I were due to renew our licenses as over 70, under 80 drivers. I walked in Schaumburg in July and swiftly moved through the whole experience in way less than half an hour walking out soon after paying my $4. The employees were knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly.
Not able to get an appointment for my wife at Schaumburg in September, we received a 2 p.m. appointment in Elgin. We walked in early at 1:30 and walked out with a new license in hand at 2:05. Just like Schaumburg, the Elgin employees were knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly.
I would recommend a review of the telephone call is needed and one other improvement is to have an automatic transfer of license gold star information to a Real ID in case one does not want to renew their license. All in all, we had the best two experiences ever renewing our licenses.
