Letter: Bond issue will prepare library for the future

I loved the recent New York Times article and photo essay titled "A Love Letter to Libraries." The poetic piece documents how modern public libraries are no longer defined by the number of books in circulation, but rather by their amenities and atmosphere, making them feel more like community centers.

Picture this: parents reading to toddlers in a space filled with books and toys just for them; families gathered for story time; tweens and teens meeting up with friends in a safe, free place; guest lectures for older adults, on topics such as travel, art and history; community services such as computers, printers, voter registration and a Notary Public; and a library staff ready to help patrons find anything they need.

This isn't an imaginary place. It's exactly what the Roselle Public Library is in our community. A haven for people of all ages. A welcoming meeting place in the center of town that's free and accessible to all.

But the space was built in 1982 and while it has served us admirably for more than 40 years, it has outlasted its useful life. Through several surveys, residents have identified priorities for the future: spaces for tweens and teens to gather and explore new ideas; a Maker Space to learn new hobbies, tinker and share crafting skills; a quiet, comfortable space to read and sit in peace; a drive-up window for quick and convenient service; and a meeting place to connect and build friendships.

This Election Day, residents will vote on a $22 million bond request to build a new library which will address these priorities and serve as a downtown destination for individuals and families.
