Letter: Mayor candidate has broad background

As a Naperville resident with prior service as a captain in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam era, I was pleased to see a candidate with a history of military service running for mayor. Benny White has a long history of service to the community as a city councilman, member of the Police and Fire Commission and an elected school board member.

He is the only candidate with significant prior elected experience. He can speak for all Naperville community members from the recently arrived new families to families like that of my wife who have lived in the community for 40 or more years.

As a West Point graduate with years of military service, he knows the meaning of duty, honor and country. He knows the destructive power of weapons of war and techniques of negotiation to avoid unnecessary conflict.

He is not running to promote any political ideology, but instead is interested in finding consensus in Naperville's best interest. A family man in a 35-year marriage with two children graduating from Naperville schools, he knows the value of commitment. He has an MBA, earned a PhD from Benedictine University and knows the importance of education.

He has assisted in his last two terms on the council in making Naperville the safest and best place to raise a family in Illinois. If elected mayor, he has pledged to continue to collaborate in the development of Naperville with responsible budgetary oversight.

I look forward to seeing him fulfill his pledge.
