Endorsement: Phipps for Wayne village president

This endorsement is a consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.

The suburbs have seen explosive growth over the last few decades. The village of Wayne is an outlier and proudly so.

Wayne residents embrace the town's historic and equestrian traditions. Few suburban leaders have been in office as long as current President Eileen Phipps, who was first elected to the office in 1995 and has rarely faced a challenger.

But, Phipps is being challenged this election by Peter Mourousias, a longtime resident of the village.

Phipps is focused on protecting the historic character of the village and finding a solution to Wayne's need for a new village hall and police station.

Mourousias is running with a group of candidates for village board who say on their website that they want to improve communication, involve residents, increase transparency, preserve historic elements of Wayne and embrace technology.

Mourousias told the Daily Herald that he became interested in village affairs when multiple auto accidents happened in front of his house. His desire to run escalated when village officials did not cite Phipps' husband, Hal, with an ordinance violation for shooting a gun within village limits.

That shooting, which led to the death of a dog, thrust the village into the spotlight during 2021 and 2022.

Hal Phipps was not charged after an investigation by the Kane County Sheriff's department.

Mourousias has not taken part in the endorsement process.

Phipps has earned another term in office and she gets our endorsement.
